Tip of the Month
Keep your dog Fit, not Fat
Your dog's weight is one of the easiest thing to control, yet so many pet dogs are obese. Not only does this make your dog unhappy, it can lead to serious health issues, including, but not limited to, Diabetes, Hypertension, Orthopedic Injuries, Osteoarthritis, Respiratory Disorder, Various forms of Cancer, and Cardiac Disease. Overfeeding your dog can also get very expensive (unnecessary extra food and vet bills).
To accomplish a healthy weight, you'll need stop giving them any table scraps and cut down the amount and fat content of the treats they get. Feed them a well-balanced, nutritionally appropriate diet on a schedule (we suggest 1 meal in the morning and 1 meal in the evening). Your dog food will have suggested feeding amounts, and you can let your dog's body guide you: Ribs should be palpable, with minimal fat/no excess fat covering. Waist should be easily noted when viewed from above, and the abdominal tuck should be evident.
You may also want to start your dog on an exercise program. Ask your vet first if they have any existing medical issues. Increase their daily activity level slowly to avoid injuries and soreness. Try to find something you will enjoy doing together so that it becomes part of your life.
