Tip of the Month
Keep your dog safe this Spring
Season changes bring on new dangers for our dogs, especially puppies born over the winter that have never experienced warmer weather. Here are some tips to keep them safe:
Always supervise them while they are outside. Softer ground may entice digging, plants will become exposed, and fertilizers will begin to be put down. Also, keep them on-leash or in a contained area (we highly recommend physical fencing). Warmer weather may make them more interested in exploring more of their environment, which may lead to roaming and they could get hit by a vehicle.
Watch for open windows and doors. Check your windows to make sure they all have secure screens installed, and don't open them wide enough that your dog could get through. If doors are going to be opened and closed frequently, put your dog in their crate or in a closed room to prevent them from slipping out.
As always, keep them away from any chemicals. Cleaning agents, fertilizers, paint, solvents, insecticides and herbicides are all common dangers used in the springtime. Also, keep them out of the garage... Anti-freeze and oil are very hazardous for your dog.
With the warmer weather, the bugs will start to come out... Make sure they are protected from ticks, fleas and mosquitoes (and heartworm) before they become a problem. Also, make sure they are up to date on all of their vaccinations, especially Lyme's disease.
